Uma rápida entrevista com Alberto Ezzy, generalista 3D, sobre sua série de oito tutoriais que irão revelar suas técnicas e segredos na produção de imagens personagens realísticos.

Alberto Ezzy é um talentoso artista 3D e atualmente atua como freelancer na Bélgica. Suas tarefas diárias incluem desde a modelagem, texturização e iluminação até fotografia de texturas fotográficas, experiências com renderização e diferentes estágios de pós-produção de seus projetos utilizando Nuke e Photoshop.

Alberto Ezzy está trabalhando numa série de tutoriais para a 3Dtotal, cobrindo todo o processo de criação de dois personagens do seu projeto “retratos populares” utilizando os softwares MODO e MARI: “O Pescador” e “minha amiga Kiwi”. “Nestas imagens tentarei explorar alguns processos de “pele” e “cabelo” no MODO que eu nunca tinha experimentado antes”, explica Alberto.

Ao longo de oito tutoriais, Alberto revela técnicas e segredos de seu workflow para um bom trabalho de iluminação no MODO, bem como dicas e truques para a criação de uma boa textura de pele (skin shader) e a configuração de cabelos (hair & fur). Ele também vai mostrar como podemos obter um realismo convincente em modelos 3D digitalizados, além de mostrar como o MARI se encaixa no fluxo de trabalho 3D. Os tutoriais também vai abordar como combinar diferentes Render Outputs do MODO para posterior pós-produção e ajustes finos no Photoshop.

A Ten24 forneceu 2 modelos 3D escaneados para Alberto trabalhar neste processo. Foi como “conhecer alguém”, sugere. “Ao abrir o modelo você começa a pensar: De onde você é? O que você faz na vida? Na versão masculina senti um melancólico pescador, velho, mas ainda forte. Já a feminina me sugeriu uma mochileira, talvez em uma viagem na Nova Zelândia!” Meus objetivos artísticos foram “menos é mais. Eu queria que os detalhes e a pele fossem o centro das atenções. Eu tentei um brinco para o pescador e uma tatuagem para a garota, mas não funcionaram pois eram pontos de distração. Eu também decidi usar e explorar duas configurações diferentes de iluminação: Physical Sun para o pescador e Studio Lighting para a menina”.

Para criar essas duas imagens incríveis, Alberto utiliza o MODO 3D e o MARI (ambos da The Foundry) para modelagem, escultura, iluminação, texturização e o Adobe Photoshop para pós-produção e pequenos ajustes finais. “Quanto ao hardware explorei a potência, qualidade e velocidade de uma AMD FirePro W9000, que superou com facilidade a exigência de ambos os trabalhos sem nenhum aborrecimento. Os modelos 3D digitalizados são bem pesados, se você precisar fazer ajustes e testes na escultura e posteriormente adicionar coisas como cabelos, ambientes e iluminação realística então você precisa de uma placa gráficas de alto desempenho”.

A AMD criou uma das mais poderosas placas gráficas disponíveis atualmente no mercado. A W9000 permite a GPU processar os dados de geometria a uma taxa de duas vezes por ciclo de clock que, além de acelerar e garantir a precisão dos seus cálculos, também permite o uso de enormes arquivos de texturas – com até 32TB de tamanho.

No entanto, Alberto nem sempre usou MODO. “Há muito tempo atrás, eu utilizava o LightWave e raramente o 3DMax, mas quando o MODO foi lançado, foi amor à primeira vista!” declara. “É um software muito intuitivo e divertido. Para mim, isso é muito importante – ser divertindo! Eu não gostava de modelar antes de conhecer o MODO, mas agora eu amo! E o que falar sobre ver o resultado final realístico em poucos segundos no Render Preview? Oh meu deus, aquilo é incrível!”.

Para Alberto, compartilhar técnicas com a comunidade não poderia ser mais inspirador. “É ótimo e muito gratificante fazer parte de grupos e fóruns”, diz ele. “Eu particularmente admiro o fato de que pessoas estejam dispostas a doar seu tempo gratuitamente para te ajudar caso tenha uma pergunta ou um problema. O número de gênios trabalhando neste setor é impressionante e também tenho muita admiração e respeito pelos programadores que criam estes softwares fantásticos que usamos todos os dias!”
